question for those of you who have run the gibside run before - can I get away with normal running shoes or do I need some 'off road' type things? (or wellies if this rain keep up :-))

am getting very nervous about Killingworth Aquathlon on Sunday. It's my first event of this type and is my way of dipping a toe (see what I did there) into the murky world of T*i to see if I like it. Anybody else doing iti (especially with more experience than me who can pass on tips to prevent me looking like a totally idiot)

Susiesue, last year at Gibside, it lashed down. I was fine in my Adidas trail shoes which have a reasonably grippy sole. Most of the run is on fairly solid forest tracks and it is a great course.

macca, I will be at Gibside, although I would like to be in two places at once. I would say that the only complicated part of your event is the transition. I'm guessing that you don't have a tri suit. Other competitors will swim and run wearing a tri suit. You will need a pair of non flappy trunks/cycling shorts that you can swim in, and then a shirt or vest that you can slip on quickly as you are putting on your trainers. I would suggest a vest as it is quite difficult trying to pull clothing onto wet skin, particularly when you are in a hurry. Have a good race.

I ran last years Gibside in the pouring rain in normal road shoes and didn't have a problem.

Hi macca53, I'm doing Killingworth and it's my first dual event too. So you won't be the only one feeling daft. I believe it's very friendly and they are used to newbies. I'm nervous too.

At least one friendly face then Scribbler - of course you'll disappear off into the distance like you did at the NE mile;)

I thought it would be very low-key as well until I saw the lady who's coaching the beginners tri where I go on the start list:-o. I have piced up a cheap tri sut as well which is *novel* and hard to get into, but which I'm assured is just the right size for me - it doesn't feel like it!
