it should indeed scibs.

i also love the fact that the good club runners WANT to win this race more than any other.

The penshaw monument hill race is the same (although not on the same scale) . Such a prestigious local race. When i did it a couple of years ago i thought half the field must have a different gravity to me or at least the air i was moving thru was 'slower' air. The small field were of like rockets and my perfectly respectable time was in the last 10 !

I got a place through my club. I think its a good thing for local clubs to be given the chance to enter. As Flip says it should be all local clubs, maybe within a 10-20 miles radius of Blaydon? Not sure how many clubs that would be. If the amount of runners entering through the club route was too large then it would be simple enough to limit each club to 50 or so.

The same with the GNR. I sent off an email about this a few days back. I feel that local clubs should get entry to the race. If this was the case then im sure we would see an increase in numbers attending running clubs. People would "take the plunge" and join a club to get their GNR entry. Once they have their entry the likelihood is that they would train with their new club.

I had a reply which went along the lines of "We are sorry you didnt make it in the ballot.....blah, blah......charity......blah". I didnt actually enter the ballot though. It just irks me that we have the worlds biggest half marathon on our doorstep and the local club runners have to scrap it out with everyone else whereas the cast of Geordie Shore would have no problem getting in.
The GNR is a great local race and I think that the clubs should be well represented to reflect this. Last year there were only 572 club north east club runners out of 37500 finishers. Granted there will be a few who didnt put their club names down on their forms or joined afterwards. So local club runners only represent 1.5% of the total field. Thats 15 for every 1000 runners.

Zingy - that is shocking statistic for GNR re local clubs. I am sure GNR could do something like London Marathon ie up to 5 places for clubs. London has about the same number of runners as GNR and they offer club places for all UKA clubs so surely GNR could do it for local clubs limke you say within a 10-20 mile radius. Although this would mean less places in the ballott and people that live further afield would have less chance of getting in.

It IS shocking isnt it. I actually counted them myself. If you go onto the results and press "club" they are all placed together. You just have to pick out the local clubs. I included clubs like Alnwick, tynedale, durham, elvet and sunderland as well as small clubs like Northumbria uni xc and northumbria police. Im sure my figure will be out by maybe 10 or so but its close enough to see the point.

Yes there would be less places in the ballot but the places lost would be going to local runners. This shouldnt just be for the GNR though. They have a fair few races. I see they have just brought out a marathon, half marathon and 10k in the lakes. Im sure the fell/mountain/hill runners wouldnt be happy if they cant get a place in their new race because 98.5% of entries were sold elsewhere.
Dont get me wrong, I like the scooby doo's and the charity buckets. Its a great day out and raises loads of money for charity. But surely they shouldnt flood it out to saturation point. If it continues like this then even the elites will drop the race. "And this year in 1st place we have haile gebrselassie, in 2nd place we have......... erm...........well, i think thats Dusty bin coming up the John Reid rd......." :)
I feel a mass demonstration coming on on the town moor!!

good point zingy. I had never thought of local clubs getting places for the GNR . What a cracking idea.

GNR would never do it though, one of, if not the only race i have ever entered that doesnt offer any discount for club members and as far as im aware they invest no money back into the regional running scene at any level.

Flip - im with hsbc, the security thing is usually ok for me and pretty quick, its just the paypal mobile site tht seems bloody useless !

I managed to get a place in last years Blaydon Race and that was due to my shift times finishing perfectly for me. Often i have to get up at 3am for an early shift and some weeks i don't get home until 1am and when i'm at work there is absolutely no way of me getting anywhere near online. Swings and roundabouts i say -

IF there was to be a ballot entry, (and someone please correct me on the next part), do you think it would be possible that if someone fails to get an entry 2 years in a row then they could have a guaranteed entry for the 3rd year? I know it could be a real headache for the admin but.....

Just my 2 pence worth :)

Tynedale Harriers have just released entry forms for their annual road races:

Tynedale 10K: Wednesday 4th July

Tynedale 10 Mile Jelly Road Race: Sunday 2nd September

Some details of both races (including links to the forms) appear at northeastraces.com and http://www.northeastraces.com/#2012-09-02-Hexham.

The 10K is a fast race that starts in Ovington and goes downhill for the first mile to the village of Ovingham. The route from Ovington to Wylam is on roads which are mainly closed. You then return on footpaths that are close to the Tyne. To begin with, you're on the North bank running along the old railway line from Wylam. Then, after using the splendid Hagg Bank Bridge to cross the River, you run on footpaths on the South bank. There's a free pie and peas supper afterwards.

The 10 mile race is described ias "undulating". However, it has a few hills. The race goes from Hexham to Ovingham. A bus costing three pounds is available from Ovingham to Hexham before the race is available if you book a place when entering. With about 8.5 of the 10 miles closed to traffic, it's a pleasant rural scenic run on minor roads through countryside that is close to the Tyne. As it name suggests, you get jelly and a sandwich at the end.

There's a two pounds reduction if you enter both the 10K and the 10M.

Together, they show you the valley of the Tyne all the way from Hexham down to Wylam.

brilliant thanks Barry. I did both of those last year and really enjoyed them. I'll definitely be signing up for this year's.
