A pal of mine has queried the results (his was waaaaaaaaay out, he seems to think 10-15 also) and got a reply back saying they are totally satisfied that the timing being accurate, amongst other stuff about experienced time keepers and times being rounded to the nearest second etc etc.
To be honest, I'm not arsed as mine wasn't a PB (nor was his), but I think the organisers may have been better off saying that there may have been some discrepancies.
With prices from £10 - £13 it's a fair amount to pay for innaccuracy, especially over 5k. That said, I think it's a cracking run and the goody bag is always canny so it won't put me off doing it again.

What's annoying though, is that they don't even look like they're bothering to look into it. I know if this happened on a race we ran & there were queries, we'd go back & check. Yes, you have professional timekeepers but someone still writes times & positions down & they get tallied up. So, mistakes can be made. Not that I ran - am just annoyed on behalf of those who have missed PBs or their times are out! A few seconds here & there yes .. but not anything up to 20secs out. Maybe everyone's garmins were affected by some kind of time warp or somesuch!

At the Coastal Run we had one lady who was 9 minutes out......and that was with chip timing!! Several hundred emails later i think we've got the times right now.
Who's doing Morpeth on Tuesday? Just had a quiet morning driving the panda round Morpeth so drove the route a few times. That drag up the pill factory gets longer everytime i see it. Ran it badly last year, so looking to improve a lot this time.

can I ask what is probably a stoopid question to you cyclists? How fit to you need to be to cycle 50 miles? I haven't cycled for years and I would need to buy a cheap bike so how realistic a goal would it be to complete the Great North Bike Ride in 4 weeks time. Bear in mind also that I am training for my first ever HM in September (GNR)

Depends really. Is it flat or hilly?? I would say that the same training principals should stand for cycling as running, ie, only increase distance by 10% per week in order to avoid injury. I'm training for The Beast part of the Durham Big Ride in September which is also 50 miles & lots of spiky bits. I have been cycling properly since I got my road bike a few months ago but have been building the miles up gradually. 50 miles could be a good 4 hours in the saddle. Hope I don't sound like I'm trying to put you off cos at the end of the day if you want to do something enough you'll do it ... but the half & a 50 mile bike ride are both big challenges & it might make sense to concentrate on one first! One would possibly suffer at the expense of the other.

thanks Lisa. It's the Great North Bike Ride I'm thinking of. I'm really only considering as a sort of 'tribute' for someone else. I'd love to do it for them but I can't afford to risk my GNR chances for it. Maybe next year.

the GNBR is done by many people who have never cycled much so you will be in good company. many stopp off in the pubs for a top up. I did it a few years ago with my 12 year old son, whom I pushed most of the way. it's flat, says I.... being a cyclist, although the drag up through seton sluice can catch a few out.
should not affect yout GNR chances I would have thought, just take it easy and pedal easy don't push the gears.

Hi SSH Ive done the GNBR for the last 3 years and its not as tough as some sportives. Especially with a tailwind.Pretty flat and although they say 50 it varies and last year I'm sure i clocked 59 miles. Great event, Good cause and plenty recovery time before GNR. Go for it, I'd say!
