I imagine being an amateur astronomer and getting interviewed on TSAN is like being in a band and getting on Top of the Pops (in the 70s and 80s). :-)

JWST update. Les than 1000 miles till L2. Then it somehow goes into an orbit around L2. It's at -200C or so and I guess it needs to get even cooler.

As they have very cold moving parts to focus the mirror I wonder how they manage without lubrication, or what materials they use that can operate at such cold temperatures?

There's a nice guide to the mirrors on the NASA website:

Very interesting. All the mirror segments were made and assembled by February 2016, so they survived nearly 6 years without someone dropping a spanner on them. :-o

Did they tap the mirror repeatedly, shouting 1 2, 1 2?

JWST has reached a mirror alignment milestone. There is a photo from it taken to check it's alignment.

Thanks Groundhog. I had been monitoring the progress of JWST, but haven’t looked for a while. I am really looking forward to seeing the images it produces once it is fully operational.
Even that mirror test has so much going on.
