On a break in Scotland, I chatted to someone who's totally changed my mindset on running.

He told me to run slower for longer, with the main aim of each and every run being to enjoy the experience and the nature around me.

I'm loving it. Yes, I still keep a note of time on feet (more out of habit during marathon training than anything). But I don't worry about pace, only checking my stop-watch once when I finish.

It is really liberating.

This is a great mindset, I've stopped running with my garmin and accepted run what I can run and enjoy being outside

It really does make a huge difference

Instead of focusing in on what you can't, the focus shifts to enjoying what you can

Running is the second most pleasurable physical activity that we do. But, like the other one, some of that pleasure is lost when we over-complicate it with anxieties about performance and the equipment we use ;)

A lovely idea, be interesting to know if the shift in mindset equates to improved performances when you do decide to test yourself a bit...

When I next tackle a full-marathon, I should have much more stamina. That should make the event more enjoyable.

Quite an interesting change of focus for you Tim. As I recall you used to be very much Mr Treadmill before. What pushed you out of the gym if you don't mind me asking?
