Dave, your experience with Inov8 295s sounds very similar to mine (same area, same size too). I don't *normally* knacker my shoes this way, but I did contact Inov8 and they told me the same thing - use a deeper footbed! I bought some 309s after that (same uppers) and they went exactly the same way with less than 200 on the clock.

I think it comes down to this: some shoes do, some don't (if you'll excuse me for stating the bloody obvious) and you have to find ones that suit/fit. I have wide feet and for years ran in Asics 21** series, the mesh around the big toe always started to go around 350 miles.

I've since switched to Mizuno (which have a wide standard toebox) and they seem indestructible.

Your holiness :-)

Is there any reason beyond aesthetics that you can't carry on running in the shoes?

Little Nemo - slightly broken
Sorry DD, didn't realise you were replacing them when they get holes. I carry on using mine as it's just on the upper part of the shoe so doesn't really affect the shoe's performance. Also it can happen as early as 100 miles and I definitely couldn't afford to replace them at that point. It does look odd though if I'm wearing pink socks with white trainers ;-)

Fundi is as fundi does.

These trainers? They have a cloth upper and a rubberised sole?

Fetch: good question.

I guess it depends on how big the hole gets. On the 320s it was fairly self-contained, so I kept wearing them for another 300 miles.

On the 255s it's not a functional problem yet, but the hole's growing fairly rapidly and there's not much to stop the upper eventually splitting right across the top of my toes.

Plus, you know, aerodynamics and that...

My toes have worn out pretty much every pair of Asics I've run in. Holes in exactly the place - obviously rubs more when I lift my toes up.
