I am Moray based and still finding great wee places - Findhorn beach - Roseisle beach. Hopeman is lovely, then there are the local moors with lots of little villages and farm shops, loads of distilleries etc - I will draw up a list later.

The West: Skye is beautiful. The mountains and beaches are lovely. A few days around Oban, especially to the quieter southerly side, are worthwhile. There's a good large campsite just outside town. Oban's a nice town. Gateway to the ferries of the Western Isles. Mull has some wonderful beaches, and boat rides out to Staffa, to see Fingal's cave, are excellent, with sightings of eagles along the way. Tobermory is a lovely small town. Famous for it's coloured houses alongside the harbour. If you're using ferries at peak summer times, then booking is recommended, as they are usually full. North East: Nairn is a town with some charm. Plenty camp sites close by. Handy for the Moray firth. It's about 25 minutes from Inverness, which is worth a visit. Culloden is just outside Inverness. Excellent museum, free for NT members. I'd agree with comments about Spey Bay and Black Isle, though we've only seen seals, no dolphins.. If you're around during the summer months, then most Highland towns have their Highland Games on some days. They're good fun days. Aviemore: In itself, not a place to bother much with, but gateway to Cairngorms. Loch Morlich is pretty with some hill walking and lots of campsites. I've spent a lot of time on Shetland. If you can stomach the 10-12 hours ferry ride from Aberdeen, it is worth a few days. Different scenery and lovely bays and beaches, that are mostly empty. And barely any trees, anywhere... You could of course, just aim for the North Coast 500, but that seems to have its own Over Tourism issues. |

For the NorthEast of Scotland you could base yourself at Stonehaven, which is really easy to get to using mostly dual=carriageway roads, and then within a 1½ hour (unhitched) radius you can drive South to Dundee (via Arbroath/lovely coast), West to Braemar (along picturesque Deeside) and North to Banff/Fraserburgh (through the rolling countryside of the Shire). Within that semi-circle you’ve got more castles than you can shake a stick at, empty beaches, nature reserves, historic sites, amazing museums and sights-a-plenty. You could easily spend your entire holiday just here! We love the West Coast too. And the Borders. Nobody should ever drive to Scotland without stopping in the Borders, but many people just wheesh straight through. |

My first house was a small Stone cottage in Hopeman back in the 80s. Lovely place to live at the time. But was a bit disappointed going back a couple of years ago to see the holiday lets, and lots of the old shops that were there had shut. Still a lovely place though. |

After advice on places to visit in Scotland.
OH and I are planning to drag the shed from the south coast to Scotland for a 4 - 6 week tour. The intention is to spend 4 - 6 nights at each campsite from which we would happily drive for about an hour to visit somewhere. The problem we are having is we don't really know where we want to go! OH is happy to do some walking e.g. round country estates, historic sites, but is no hiker, so mountains are out!
So far we have agreed that Loch...
