Thanks both; that's a good start. All further suggestions welcome, though.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I’m hoping someone here recognises what this is.

I’m digging out a mature border where a couple of types of plants are taking over and because we’ve got a lot of borders I can never remember what perennial plants in the borders this time of year.

It looks a bit like a dahlia tuber but I’m 99% sure there aren’t any dahlias in that border and anyway it’s too early for one to be sprouting AFAIK.

The shoots look too sturdy to be dahlia. Peony? It is early but some parts have been very mild so it's probably confused, whatever it is.

I’m in the southeast so very likely to be something coming through early. We’ve got lots of daffodil foliage coming up. I’ve definitely seen a peony somewhere so that’s possible.

Doesn't look like a peony to me but I have been digging around in my head all afternoon to work out what it is.

Rosehip
Looks more like the roots and shoots of my yucca plant that I keep digging up, but the damn thing just grows again

I was thinking it was a bit like something which grows in my front garden with broad fleshy long leaves - bit like a leek if you see what I mean - but I have not idea what it is. I try to pull it up.

I don’t think I’ve seen a yucca in the garden! I’ve potted it up in case it’s something worth hanging onto.
