What ted says depends where you are now the answer will be different for a beginner than it is for Mo Farah and both answers will be right

it's all relative - your medium run is shorter than your longer runs but it is longer than a short run

Personally I quite like the fact that I can look back and see how my own definition of a medium long run (and surely it is entirely personal) has shrunk over the last 12 months. I like lammo's point about time on feet though as well, for me 10 miles is a long run and will doubtless remain so until I take the plunge to enter a marathon (which ain't happening any time soon)

For me, at the moment, anything over 8 miles is a long run. But it varies, depending on how much training I'm doing. It's been as little as 6 miles. But I've never been in a state where 10 miles wouldn't count as a long run (which would take me between 1:45 and 2 hours). I think a long run is anything that's longer than you usually do, to an extent that you wouldn't do a run of that distance more than once a week. |

If you are training for a 5km then 5 miles is a long run

The longest race I do is half marathon distance, so for me, I count anything over 7 miles as a 'long run'. I't is probably not the proper definition of a long run.

Not usually tackling any race longer than 10k (in about 40 mins) then I always classed an hour or over (about 8 miles) as long, it being 50% of my race time longer than actual race time. I think medium long on the log was created for the marathon runners and their schedules
