Are there any fetchies out there that has tried the Maffetone Method and was it been successful?

I know that Mitch on the chi thread dabbled, I have also done some looking into it. Sadly I got bored. I like HR training but I also like suffering.

I tried it briefly, but like Gobi, just found it a bit joyless.
Currently reading his big book on endurance training and racing, which is quite interesting.

I did indeed dabble. I got a bit bored too:-)

Seriously though, I'm a fan of Maffetone's approach but I don't like the 180 minus age formula. I had to 'run' so slowly that I lost all motivation to train. I still train to heart rate but chose a different route.

The book is a good read, like any HR based training it does require a very long term vision. I tried it for most of Jan and Feb in order to get my mileage up and it helped a lot. Do feel like I'm seeing the benefits start now as well.

180 minus age would mean I wasn't allowed to run *at all*! I can't believe that I would benefit from just walking until my HR dropped.

As I see it, the problem is that the number gets lower the less fit you are, wheres more orthodox HR training methods cut some slack until you get fitter. For me, the resulting 131 or so is about what I train at anyway, except that I throw in a couple of harder sessions per week.

I bought the Big endurance book about 4 weeks ago and plan to try this after the Brighton Marathon. I've tried a couple of my long runs at below 138 HR but struggled to run so slow any longer than 7 miles.

I can see that the number is lower for less fit people, but surely I'm not so unfit that I'm not allowed to run until I get fitter?!

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't see that it can be a method that works for everyone LOL. I can walk at 150bpm but I can run a marathon at 175-180 too.
