Good work Tim, bang in the middle of your 4 - 4:10 prediction I seem to recall.

I think positive goal setting has a lot to do with performance in the marathon.

Well done on the PB Tim and great that you executed the plan.

I need to be the naughty someone who asks the question though. You ran a huge positive split of 1:50/2:14 and as late as 23 miles were on for sub 4.....

If you had gone 1:58, could you have then run 2:01 and had a 3:59 outcome.... or even 1:55/2:04 etc etc

It might have made a difference had my positive split been slightly less positive (ie a 1:55 first half). But we'll never know.

Tim, I am going to stick my neck out and say it would have made a difference - based on my experience anyway.

VLM this year I THOUGHT I could run 3:02 and set off at that pace, but around 6 or 7 miles I realised it wasnt happening and eased off a bit. Went through half around 1:32:30 so already 90s down on plan....2nd half was then a 1:41.....all because I got my early pacing wrong and overcooked it.

I am pretty certain I could have run 3:10, maybe 3:08 if I had run easier early on.....

People are infinitely variable. There is no 'one size fits all'.

I trained exclusively on treadmills. Maybe, if I'd have run faster in the marathon if I'd trained outdoors and my quads had been more used to tarmac.

I spent the day before race-day walking all over Chester - every inch in the zoo, around the City, etc. Maybe, I'd have run faster in the marathon if I'd rested more on the Saturday.

I spent the evening before race-day in a pub (there was live music), chowing down on fish and chips, sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, and half-a-bottle of wine. Maybe, I'd have run faster in the marathon if I'd dined on a pasta-rich meal, and water.

I always run with powerfully inspirational music, but I decided against it this time. Maybe, I'd have run faster in the marathon if I'd had motivational tracks in those difficult closing miles.

On and on and on the list goes.

But really, who cares.

The bottom line is that 'the whole package' worked for me, inasmuch as I ran the marathon of my life.
