I've got some gels, and they work fine, but they're expensive if you're going to be using a few each week when the long runs ramp up. I plan on trying some real food alternatives, till I find something that works for me. Any suggestions what to try? I'm currently thinking: banana chips, dried apricots. What else?

I took a packet of peanuts with me today and a couple of small apples and they worked well as fuel. Nuts have a lot of fuel per gram but obviously you don't get an instant hit of energy as you would with the sugary stuff. I don't tend to use gels other than in races.

Well, there are the obvious ones like jelly babies, but the sweet stuff can get a bit yucky on a long distance run. I have tried Soreen recently, and found it easily digested. I'd be interested to hear about any savoury alternatives that anyone has tried.

Maltloaf or flapjack.

If you can eat that sort of solid stuff. If not, jelly babies.

A LDWA stalwart recommended wraps with a non bulky filling (cheese spread, jam, hummus, just plain butter) as a good option.

I just carry some toffees or Shot Bloks.

If you're taking a drink with you, Accelerade isn't too sweet and gives a reasonable dose of calories :)

Sure there is a better option, but the 10p packets of haribo do well.

Also electrolyte drink tabs like high 5, think they work out 25p a tab online for 750ml-ish.

Eccles cakes, if you can stomach them.

Vraps, wraps and jam suggestions sounds v.good.
