I found a tick on one occasion when I was up around the Armboth fells and it had really burrowed deep into my leg, the usual tick-twisters just weren't getting it out. Some DIY surgery with a safety pin followed, I made a proper crater, awful mess. Blood everywhere.

Good advice, NE, it never occurred to me to carry a sachet of Oramorph or a few Remedeine Forte when out hiking, but it makes sense.

I like to take a spare contact lens.

Big fan of Rohan when it comes to technical trousers. Not a big fan when it comes to brambles.

Never had a tick. One of our cats had one once. Properly revolting.

My shoe for long distance walking is the Altra Lone Peak (currently V6). Huge toe box and zero drop. They don't suit everyone, but they do suit me.
I'm currently hiking the Appalachian Trail, and Altra seem to be the most common make of shoe on the trail. Hardly anyone is wearing walking shoes or boots.

My New New Balances have arrived. They are more of a teal colour than the blue they appear in this photo. They are very comfortable and I shall wear them everywhere.

Are they the Hierro v6 Dio? Excellent shoe. I got over 700 miles out of a pair of the v5s and am well into a pair of the v6s, a most underrated trail shoe. Sole is excellent on rock too.

They are indeed. I always have NB 7.5 2E and and really glad to get some good trail shoes in a wide fitting. My old Salomon Speedcross have been great but the are very hard and a bit tight across the forefoot.

They look good Dio. I’m still getting used to my squishy Speedgoat 5s. I did 12.5 miles of brisk walking in them on Sunday without a problem mind except minor vertigo

I have Hierro 5s, the first pair died when the tongue of 1 split and fell apart after ~400 miles, but no sign of that happening to the 2nd pair

Great for my part road part trails locals runs, not good when the mud is really wet and slippy though
