Question for all you club members-
London marathon.

Does your club get allocated places?
How does your club choose who gets the places?

Our club does a draw, everyone with a reject slip can go in the draw. People have been known to join the club, go in the draw and get a place, never to be seen again.

Wondering what other clubs do?

To be eligible our members have to have been members for at least a year and to have run at least two league races. Or something like that.

My understanding is that each club has to apply for places, they are not allocated unless the club asks for them. The number of places given to each club has reduced, it used to be that each affiliated club got 1, then 1 more for each 50 members. My club has no specific rules about eligibility for the the place except that you have to be a member. All the names go in a hat, a name is drawn for each place. If you get a club place and can't do run the race because of injury , the place comes back to the club and it's not yours to pass on. I suppose that's because they haven't had issues with people pissing about, as you have. I have heard some clubs require you to have tried to get your own through the ballot and been unsuccessful

oi you
Our club also has a 1 year membership requirement, plus they must have contributed to club activities in some way, eg marshalled at our 10 miler, competed in team events like XC league, and not run VLM the previous year.

For my club, they have a ballot and you have to have been rejected from the general ballot, and have been a club member for 4 months before the club ballot as well as being a member of the club when you entered the general ballot.

We require members to have a reject slip from the ballot (if they couldn't be bothered to try and get in directly we don't believe they should then qualify for the club place) and they must be affiliated as an individual to EA.

Not all our members choose to affiliate individually and as the VLM allocation is based on the number of senior members you have who are affiliated, it seemed wrong to allow an unaffiliated person to go in the club draw

At our club, you have to present your rejection slip and be signed up to England Athletics in order to be entered into the draw. Our reason being is that the places we’re offered (for us, a paltry one) is based on the number of EA affiliated members we have. We want to encourage members to add EA affiliation when they renew club membership as it would benefit the club, taking us over the threshold to two VLM places. Of course, there’s always the chance that the greedy organisers move the goalposts again and we have to have 200 members to get two places. They’ve done that before!
