Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

If they go virtual I really hope they let you defer if you want as I don't want to miss my chance at a 'proper' London

I think (hope) they'd have to - it's not what you entered or paid for.

I've little interest in a virtual race.

I wouldn't object to a virtual expo (an online shop instead of needing to travel to Excel)!

Noooo...the best bit of the expo is walking through the entrance with the London marathon theme /music from 'The Trap' playing 😃

I cannot for the life of me see how they could possibly do anything about social distancing - in the journey to the starts, the runners, the spectators, the volunteers. Unless the whole idea of social distancing has been scrapped by October, a large event with spectators can't possibly happen.

Trying to compare the Premier League in all of this. They arrive in face masks and get temperature checked before getting up close with one another for 90 minutes.

Marathon? No expo with all race packs posted. Compulsory face masks in Greenwich Park/Blackheath. Temperature checks when entering runners only area or starting zone. Runners set off in waves. Spectators discouraged to be present. Runners to carry own water in early stages to avoid the early race drinks station scrums.

As Carp said, it's all down to whether social distancing is still with us in the autumn. Either that or the disclaimer that you are taking part at your own risk covers COVID-19. A virtual race makes a mockery out of the whole event. There will be a marathon or there won't. You cannot look at any alternatives.

There's a big 10k race in Boulder I've done a few times. About 50,000 people starting in waves a minute or so apart. It takes about 2h 30 to start and the course is pretty well packed for the entirety of the event. London roads are probably a bit wider on the whole.

The wave starts certainly help make the experience a better one for all, but I don't think it could be anywhere close to adequate as a solution for a full-scale event. People are still queueing up in a big mass at the start and to some extent the finish, and that's before you even consider the much larger number of spectators which IIRC is about 20x larger than runners, often packed in large crowds.

"At your own risk" misses the point that the danger is primarily to society rather than to participants. Which has been the case from the start.

What I'm saying is that we don't want to see a farcical event. Either the coronavirus has diminished sufficiently and social distancing measures are dropped in time for a traditional marathon or it is cancelled altogether.

Don't disagree with that, but I also don't see much chance of it happening.
