Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Synge - A lot of major companies are imposing International travel bans on employees and business conferences are being canceled, they just aren't as newsworthy as a large sporting event or likely to cause a social media frenzy. I would give you some links but they all have annoying pop-ups.

Thanks, BK, helpful to have that perspective - working for a small employer (ca 100 staff) with contact mainly with smaller businesses a long way from London, it's easy to miss out on what's going on elsewhere.

I was due to be in the States the last week in March for a bi-annual conference which was cancelled (at quite a high cost) last week. Its surprising how many things have been cancelled so far - largely precautionary and largely as airports are likely to be a breeding ground.

In many ways the longer that they can delay any decision on London the better - early decisions can only be negative

There was a huge physics conference in the US this week which was cancelled....at the weekend, by which time probably hundreds and perhaps thousands had already travelled, and huge sums of non-refundable money will have been wasted (which may be a serious problem for grad students and low-paid researchers). Seems pretty shambolic and pointless - it's not like the organisers had any specialist knowledge about the risks.

The number of conferences etc cancelled has surprised me, presumably they've done the cost calculations and can sleep easy as most of the financial losses will be borne by the attendees rather than the conference organisers themselves. So it becomes relatively risk free for the organisers, making it an easy decision for them to make.

And often they'll be able to run keynote sessions via online webinar instead.
