It's certainly adding a new and different element to the usual pre marathon madness and we're nowhere near the taper yet:-)

Unfortunately infection rates and deaths are likely to keep rising for some time and if I don't get to run my marathon of choice and enjoy the 40th anniversary experience I'll be disappointed but it is only a race and something we do for fun.

It's an interesting example of how journalists can spin a story up out of nothing. The reporters were chatting about Paris half being cancelled just before they interviewed Hancock, so they asked him about London, and he basically said no, it's business as usual, there are no plans to change anything, but couldn't specifically rule out the possibility of this changing if the outbreak spread. And so this is spun into a story about how officials are considering "restricting participation"!

A lot of the planning is about "worst case scenario" . Reality will hopefully be far from that. I think there is an inevitability that some competitors and spectators will choose not to be involved to minimise their own risk or because they are I'll or quarantined which will reduce the numbers slightly. This in my opinion is the best case scenario.

We have a contingency plan if cancelled, given I've hotel accommodation anyway, which is to run marathon distance on the Thames Path. Other Fetchies are welcome of course.

I must say that I am far more wary about spending three hours in a train carriage (which I am doing to travel to a conference in London next week) or attending a conference (which I am also doing next week!) than I would be about taking part in a big city marathon. Am I missing the point?

(That is not intended to be trolling, I really don’t see why there is such a focus on sporting events compared to other situations where we choose to let ourselves be placed in close proximity with many others.)

I suspect things like sporting events fall under the category of "do we really need to do this, or could we just chose not to?" vs commuting / keeping economy moving.

I'd be more wary about attending a football match or crammed onto the Tube than standing in a pen of runners waiting to start a marathon though, definitely.

I don't think there really is a huge focus on sporting events, lots of other meetings have been cancelled. I'm rather more interested in a big conference in May that I'm hoping to go to in Vienna, currently the organisers seem confident...

Of course there's a focus on London Marathon right here though, it's the London Marathon thread on a running site :-)

In fairness, it was directly raised as a specific on BBC Breakfast, and I don't know that any of them are fetchies ;-)

Personally, I'm more concerned about Manchester as its sufficiently close to be in the early stages of containment restrictions.
