Oh I haven't heard about this. My club is huge (640 affiliated members) and we have been told that we have four places, wasn't anticipating a problem?. Btw it was our man who the Swansea Harrier Matt Rees helped over the line this year. We are paying for Matt to travel first class to London this year and paying for his accommodation as a thankyou.

We don’t have any other junior members LD, and I’m pretty sure they’re all first claim. I know our secretary did say last week it was odd that they were saying it could take until 12 December when its normally a very quick response - I hope your club gets the full allocation LD (and you jennyw - lovely gesture from Chorlton btw :-))

My club is in the same pickle too, 125 members so based on the info we had we gave two delighted ladies the places via a ballot at our recent annual dinner. Neither of them have run it before. I don't particularly mind if VLM want to change the allocation but for chrissakes give us plenty of notice, it is the late timing of this that stinks. Let us know if you get any response from VLM Towers Larkim.

i got this back from them. Doesn't really say much but seems to confirm that next year will be unchanged. Though as I'm hoping to be able to apply for GFA next year, I'm suspicious that they'll restrict the numbers there instead next time around! Not sure what the point about "statistical fairness" means. And whilst I'm sure they are right about the GFA places being dominated by club participants, the joy of the club entry places was that it didn't have to be the usual fast runners who got places as by definition they get their entitlement anyway! "Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. The London Marathon is the most popular marathon on the planet and we have had an unprecedented application for places in the 2018 event from every entry group (Ballot, Good for Age, International, etc.). The club entries are one of the last entry points in the chronological cycle. As a result, we could not be certain until November of the number of places that were available. As a result, we could only communicate the changes this month. Due to the increased number of Good for Age participants in the marathon - the majority of which are from running clubs – we estimate there will be more club runners in the event than any time in the last 15 years. As we received 386,050 entrants into the ballot, this meant that statistical fairness determined that clubs with fewer than 10 first claim affiliated members also had to go into a ballot for places. While we review the entry system in detail every year, we can guarantee that the allocation to running clubs affiliated to British Athletics for the 2019 event will be the same as for 2018." |

Thanks for that Larkim. In our case we intend to sort out our unlucky hopeful as follows. She will apply for a charity place (assuming there are any left!). We also have another 5 club members running on GFA etc who will all muck in with fund raising to help raise the necessary total.

Is anyone else still waiting for confirmation of their application for the club places? I received the acknowledgement email and admittedly thst said it could take up to 12 December for the application to be approved but I can't help worrying!

LD - from what I've read elsewhere, providing your number of club athletes was >10 you should hear back almost immediately - are your numbers on the cusp of one of the break points between different numbers being allocated? It could be that they are verifying which side of the line you're on. But if you (say) claimed on the basis of having 100 members, and even if their system said 98, 90, 103, 122 etc, I'd have thought you'd have heard by now - other clubs have done. They were very responsive with me when I queried things - no harm in an email to them? |
