Having played with strava for only a week, im concluding it is nothing more than a bit for fun for the 'segment' feature. Although so far that is good fun as it is making me get out and actively chase those segments (which do tend to be climbs) which can only be a good thing. This may not last of course!

I agree with island.

It also makes me all warm inside seeing the amount of people who are out on their bikes riding the same roads as me every day, some days it really is surprising (and these are only the people who bother to log their rides on Strava).

I happen to agree with most of the people commenting. I actually rarely go out to get a KOM, if I manage to do well on a KOM it's just down to luck really I don't change the way I'm riding just to bag a KOM. Everyone takes on the ride knowing the risk. I'd be taking a note of my PBs and records long before strava existed, but I also know that there are many better riders than me out there!

Read the article you sent GreP. It's interesting, but I think some of this people need to get a life!

my thoughts from a simpleton up'north. strava uses a mobile phone that's makes calls, garmin is a gps that doesn't. it ain't gonna be so clever and as others have said, lapse time, data recording etc won't be as good.

the big question is..... only, only, only 17 miles? ;-)

strava not much use in suffolk or norfolk, or essex. and don't try and argue that essex has climbs! :-)

strava do have an app for phones, like many other web training tools, but they also support lots of other GPS devices. I use my garmin to log stuff on Strava.

A KOM in strava terms can be any section of road (they call them segments) that a user sets up so it doesn't have to be a climb. It started out as climbs only though, with strava recognising certain climbs automatically and categorising along the lines of the UCI guidelines.

The Singletrack article suggests people are setting up downhill segments on strava which is potentially a license to have accidents.

About This Thread

A sort of 'Why FetchEveryone is better than STRAVA' wire.
----

Last Sunday I cycled to church.

My Fetch log, which I trust beyond all possibility of doubt, tells me this:

17.07 miles, 1h19m46s, max speed 30.3mph

Garmin Connect, which one assumes is closest to the raw data, tells me this:

17.07 miles, 1h19m46s, max speec 30.3mph

This makes me very happy.

Now, gentle Fetchies, you may have seen or read or experienced strava recently, and been tempted, as I was, to 'dabble' and see whether it might be fun. strava taking data from the same source (my Garmin EDGE 800) tells me this.

17.1 miles, 1h20m48s, max speed 31.9mph

Interesting, eh?
