Definitely some sort of pre-registration, you get to keep your number for the next race.

Our local XC league has pre-entry via the clubs for the series, you then get given your race number for the whole series. On the day you just pay the day fee and they tick you off on a list so it's quicker.

Parkruns here and there must have faced the same problem - what do they do I wonder.

Keeping the race number for a series is a really good idea, if you think about it, conceptually that is waht Parkrun does. I did a race in Madeira and noticed that all of the runners from the very numerous Island running clubs turned up with race numbers already on which I was led to believe are allocated on a permanent basis like a UKA number or Parkrun barcode which sounds like a good idea for UK.

As a local runner I think last night was exceptional. There were a lot of factors which led to the large number. Perfect weather, runners getting their last club league points etc. I personally think in the cold months of winter it'll die down. Not sure putting the price up again is the right thing to do. I was a bit concerned about the dog walkers along the prom who had no idea that a race was on. I actually saw one poor lady frantically searching for her dog which was lost amongst all the runners. A few signs would sort that out though.

How is the race overpopularity going, DeeGee? Did you find a solution, or did the problem sort itself?

Good question. We've moved to online entry in advance only, which has caused some consternation, but numbers have stayed high, so It's kind of worked.
