Help!! Laptop log in screen not showing just shows a "window" type symbol. Took a pic but cannot add to thread.

Any ideas?

Can you start it in safe mode? Force a power off; when you turn it on again, it should offer you a safe mode start.

Thanks but no to both above I cannot get to log in page it just goes to a screen - see pic I posted in gallery earlier ( I think)

You may need to hold one of the function (F) keys down when you power on to get the safe menu up. This varies from device to device but is often F8, F10 or F12. You can Google it.

Do you have a recovery disk?

fettled it - a long way around, a bit of shift+restart button and some option fiddles and a disk repair!
