Has anyone done this? My main concern apart from the thought of 50 miles is getting lost. Are map reading skills essential?

I haven't done this before Rhniefossil but have entered this year. My map reading skills are pretty non-existent but someone at work gave me a couple of maps yesterday and I spent a few hours last night plotting the course. It's not as difficult as I thought. I was totally bricking it as well about the navigation. Mind you I am going to get a GPS as well ;-)

Think GPS is the best idea. Map reading at night scares me even more. Tried to do the Kimm once and got very lost and miserable--at least we won't have to carry a tent at this one!

They mention the Garmin Etrex H on the Lakeland website so I'm going for that one. Already bought the head torch but hoping that I'm not going to have to do too many miles in the dark!

Hiya, I'm doing this one too. Have bought the aforementioned Garmin and plan to take paper maps too. I'm also hoping not to be out in the dark for too long. I mean, it's 50 miles but it's near the longest day of the year. If we start at noon we should be able to finish by midnight, no? Or have I seriously underestimated the hills?
