"after running an ultra distance, everything else in life just seems that little bit easier"

Liked this quote from the winner blog - am finding it to be true :)

Hi all. I'm training for my first, flat, 36 mile Ultra (6th Nov) and was toying with the idea of making the next step next year, to 50 miles. Would the L50 be suitable do you think? In the past I've enjoyed walking in the Lakes, I've done a few short fell runs - and a couple of marathons. Thing is, I'm not great with maps (tend just to use guidebooks) - so will this be a suitable / good race for me?

The road book is so good you don't really need the map, so fine in that sense.

However I'd do another 40-50 first, as this is the hardest 50 in the UK, probably on a par with other 7-80 milers.

LythamRunner, yes, I don't see why not. It IS hard - certainly the hardest thing I've ever done - but it's a lovely event and the time allowed is generous :)

LR if you recce the route (on your own or on the official recce days - see dates in the thread header) you'll be fine. Best not to go into it blind though.

Lots of good advice thanks everyone. :-)
Now I know for sure that I need to thoroughly consider / research it first.

Maybe get a spring 40ish Ultra in too ...... ?
Need to get through my 35 miler first! :-O

If you can read a road book and follow directions, I don't think a recce is necessary. We never have for either 50 or the 100 and never had a problem with the nav. However it can;t do any harm either :)
