Has anyone done the Lake Baikal Ice Marathon? Am I completely whacko to be even thinking about this? I live in Northern Iceland, so I am used to running on ice, but probably not quite this cold. I'd love to hear from any of you who have given it a go. Looks fab but kind of terrifying...

Sounds very interesting. I particularly like the fact that if you don't pass the halfway mark by the cut-off time, the organisers will pick you up in a hovercraft

Not much opportunity to practice running on ice/snow here. I think that if I were to do it, I'd want to get there on the trans-siberian, rather than just flying in. There are stories about British runners in this race in previous years in a couple of the national newspapers (telegraph & mail) telegraph.co.uk |

I know someone who did it a couple if years ago. Said it was crazy hard but very cool. They normally run around London though, so you sound better prepared for the conditions!

Chris Heaton ran it a couple of years ago, he's ex 10 in 10 and 30 in 30 (Windermere and Langdale). He's tough as old boots and loved it. Dunno if this will work, it's a link to some video footage he took on YouTube. Am seeing him tomorrow if you have any specific questions... Baikal 1st 20k: |

It is the sort of race where I should not click the link. That is how I came to do the Polar Night Half Marathon a couple of years ago. That was run on packed ice. Great fun but I have never been so cold afterwards. This looks rather more difficult.
