Kettlebells ?

I am thinking of buying a kettlebell(s) and incorporating that as a bit of cross / core strength training into mt routine.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Is it worth it for a runner ?

2) I am a bit of a weakling and the online suggested weights sound like weights I would struggle with. What would the ideal starting weight be. Bear in mind I dont want to be 'body building' but just doing something that might benefit my running.

Any thoughts appreciated

1) Definitely worth it!

2) When I'm practising regularly I use 4, 8 and 12kg depending on the exercise, and I'm a fairly little person if that helps..?

Make sure you get cast iron ones not vinyl as they are much smaller for the same weight so can do more with them. More Mile are good value.

Thanks....

More mile only have neoprene ones which I assume is vinyl like. I have found some reasonable priced cast iron ones though. If I wanted to get started would a 4 and 8 kg be a good place to start ?

Not sure I want to stretch to all 3 right away.

ime if your reasonably fit I wouldn't bother with a 4kg i'd go to 8kg and 12kg. I was using a 4kg within a couple of weeks of shoulder surgery to help build it up.

I'm pretty sure that for a bloke - however weedy - 4kg wouldn't be worth it. Might as well use a dumbbell for anything lower but one handed. I'm 63 and I bought an 8 to start with. It's challenging for me one handed but easy with both hands - and I'm small and weedy.

I would also say 4kg would be too light. Our lightest is 8kg and we have added to them as we got stronger.

I've been using an 8kg one for two months now and it's helped make a world of difference. I'm back to my pace of around London time even though my running miles have been of a ticking over quantity.

I've got a 10kg one for my birthday, time to up the ante a touch.

Oops that came out a bit wrong - I meant if you wanted something lower than 8kg to one arm press (for instance) to begin with, you could use a dumbbell. Because kettle bells are expensive you don't want to buy something you'd 'outgrow' in a few weeks.

I would recommend going to have a session with a PT who is a KB instructor to ensure you learn good technique. If you did you could try out some different weights and get an idea of what you might want to buy.
