I have just been told I have ITB in both knees. Some days it does spread below my knee.Walking up and down stairs is something I simply can't do pain free.I have tons of exercises to do twice aday and am being referred to a podiatrist....I do trust my GP as he is a sports injury specialist and has done a fair few Iron Man's over the years.
Yes I can still run as long as it is not painful and I have warmed up

Lorraine - have you had your IT bands stripped by a sports physio?

Hmm...I had ITB issues in my right leg last year and it was a real nightmare. I must say though, my symptoms never included pain down from the knee. For me it was very localised, outside of right knee mainly, and some tightness on outside of hamstring (ITB) all the way up to my hip. The real indicator that it was ITB for me was the 'flicking' you'd feel when you bend your knee (walking, running, etc.).

A couple of sports massages, regular foam roller usage, and ITB specific stretches soon sorted me out.

Good luck with it, it's not a nice thing to have. I found doing the exercises helped, and the foam roller, and going for less cushioned shoes so I'm less likely to heel strike. I was waiting for the pain to start during my last marathon, which was v. hilly, with *tons* of steep downhills, but I got through it with no knee pain.

You basically need to develop glutes of steel. :-)

I had itb for a couple of months two years back . very strange . I could run for almost exactly 5 miles and then it was like my leg was going to fall of with incredible pain. I know I was lucky for it only to last a short time . it either just went or the stretching my ex girlfriend fizz showed me worked . mind she hurt me like hell and still has my dog . bitch.

Seems I may have a case of ITB - I do have "the stick" at home, but no foam roller. Might do a few stretches this evening and then go and see about getting myself a sports massage

Do you still have hip pain even when not running with ITB?
