Last Wednesday I went out for 18 miles. All was fine except for the need to jump into the hedge several times to avoid the private school parents in their big cars. Then about 13 miles in I got a sharp pain in the lower part of my right shin. It came and went and didn't stop me running at the same pace as before.

Once Thursday it was fine but I had a rest day anyway, on Friday it got a bit sore again walking from work to the car park. Saturday it was fine all day but started to hurt 3 miles into my evening run. Yesterday it was a bit sore but I went out anyway and it was sore all the way but again didn't affect my running.

It has been sore ever since, inclduing when lying down in bed for the night. It is the lower third of the shin at the front but also down into the front of the ankle and the top of my foot. Moving the foot in any direction exacerbates it. Walking does the same. I'd describe it as a burning pain that becomes sharp when I provoke it. Nothing visible externally.

Never experienced this before. Advice please!

Is your shin tender to touch as well? I have had shin splints years ago and I don't remember any pain when not running/walking - ie it was exacerbated only by impact of feet to the ground. Could be worth a trip to a physio?

Yes, tender when prodded too. Seems quite specific over the bone. I too thought that shin splints was impact prvoked.

Well my shins were certainly sore to the touch as well, it does sound a bit like it - I know some people swear by compression socks as a cure.

IM no medical expert but I have suffered quite badly from shin splints in the past (dont play indoor football people!) and I would say feeling pain at the top of your foot would be unusual for shin splints though I think the tibialis anterior muscle (commonly associated with shin splints) does have its insertion point on the top of the foot so it might be something else to do with that tendon, explaining the pain when you move your foot?

this may be controversial, have you thought of consulting a doctor? He/She would be certainly more qualified to comment on your injury..

I have SOD as we have a very good NHS musculoskeletal service around here. However, I think in terms of injury these are early days and I was looking for some advice/experience from others first. I've done some googling and found one bit that says it wouldn't hurt at rest but then something else that says it will hurt at rest as it gets worse. This is the sort of thing that other people may have experience of. Also I don't seem to fill the criteria for causes of it so wanted to find out if other relatively experienced runners have run into problems.

"Its unusual for a doc to be trained in sports medicine/injuries"...

they're probably more trained than the average forum poster and they can certainly point you towards the right specialists (if needed). ;-)
