Here's a guide to increasing battery life on the iPhone. As I had started to suspect Facebook is a big culprit. It also provides some clarity as to which Apps running in the background matter and which don't:

"The truth is, those apps in your multitasking menu are not running in the background at all: iOS freezes them where you last left the app so that it's ready to go if you go back. Unless you have enabled Background App Refresh, your apps are not allowed to run in the background unless they are playing music, using location services, recording audio, or the sneakiest of them all: checking for incoming VOIP calls , like Skype. All of these exceptions, besides the latter, will put an icon next to your battery icon to alert you it is running in the background."

Probably worth clarifying that playing music = doing anything audio-based, which doesn't put any notification in the status bar.

Also, given that so many apps now use location or geo-fencing services and that many of them ask to run in the background, that list of apps running in the background probably means most of tour commonly used ones!

That's what I discovered Flanker, following the instructions in the article. It's amazing how many apps use both location services and auto refresh.

Something of interest to iPhone 5 users:

bbc.co.uk

I've checked my own phone, which shows signs of the fault, and it has an eligible serial number.

I'm surprised that my 5c is not eligible - its very sluggish compared to my old 4s which is still in use.

I mean the sleep/wake button is sluggish ... not the phone in general

It only applies to the 5 I think, and then only up until March 2013.

Did you have an older iPhone surreystrider? I've got the 4s which is perfectly working (bar the poor battery) and signal which is the provider not the phone.

I have a colleague who got one and she loves it too…
