Nice article, though (and I'm happy to be corrected on this) I thought conventional intervals were more about stimulating improvements in VO2 max. I was under the impression the biggest improvements in LT came from tempo (including tempo-intervals, i.e. steadier pace but higher effort/rest ratio) and long slow runs.

Haven't read the article yet, but MuMe's comment looks spot on. LT improvements come from sustained effort, if I remember my Joe Friel.

Useful article - I liked the idea of the partners running around a lake - may suggest to my husband we do that for a session on our holiday. Our club mixes it up each week with short intervals (often run as fun relays mixing abilities up), medium reps (half a mile in a local park on or off road), mile reps and hill reps. I expect most clubs do the same.

As far as I understand it, both sessions will improve LT.

Grepstein - I seem to remember there was a nice graph in DRF that showed an interval session. I haven't got my copy here.

I haven't got either of my copies here (one's beside the bed at home, and Nellers has got the other).

Will investigate later. In the meantime I s'pose I'd better read the articackle.
