2005 - you could buy great finishers T-shirts with "Finisher" in big letters.
you must pick up the New York times result supplement on the monday & also say "never again at 23 miles"

The New York Times supplement is fine if you finish sub-5. It did say that it only includes finishers up to 4h30 but I believe it went up to around 4h47 in 2010.
The t-shirt I got at the finisher tent is black with some bridges on and says in small lettering "NYC Marathon 2010 Finisher". Prefer white and it's really boring to be honest.
Even the top you get in your goody bag only says NYC Marathon 2010 and makes no mention of finishing.

Okay I'm about to click the button for my guaranteed entry, I remember in previous years I had to book bus to the start but some folks have also sais how ridiculously early they leave.
Any thoughts, do I need it or is it just as easy to make my own way?

Last year (2010), we friend and I stayed at a hotel on 5th & 37th - just around the corner from the New York Public Library. As we had booked the bus pickup on our application before we booked the hotel, we were allocated the bus from New York. As we weren't allowed to change the bus pickup location, we decided to get a cab so we walked up to 5th at 6AM and got a cab down to the Staten Island ferry. I think it cost about $10 between us but I might be wrong on that. When we got to the ferry terminal, we were allocated 6:14 and 6:30 so arranged to meet at the other side. We then went our seperate ways but the 6:15 was delayed so we ended up getting the same ferry. At the other end, we then waited in the station and had breakfast and watched the queses for the transfer bus go down as it was chuffing cold.

Also, might be a bit late for this year, but my training partner and I had guaranteed entries under the "3 rejections and you're in" rule. We booked our flights in January as soon as they became available and found a hotel on 5th & 27th that had just opened. We managed to get a deal on the hotel becuase of that.
The cost of hotel + flight ended up being £965 per person (we took the other halves as well). Obviously had to add on the cost of entering the race, which isn't cheap, and the cost of buying half of Macy's.
Oh, and the other thing I left out is that this was for 9 nights. So a hotel in Manhattan and 9 nights for £965 each. The moral of the story here is that it doesn't need to cost silly money. We waited for the guaranteed entry and then booked early (ok, granted we wouldn't get that deal on the hotel again - the rooms were half price), but we had a 9 day holiday for less that some of the tours.

I should add that another deciding factor for doing it independently was the cost of the tours for the 2 non runners in our group which quickly adds up.

Macys - worst experience of my life. Hell on Earth is an understatement!
Never saw anyone check a race number at all for the ferries or shuttle buses on Staten Island. Just a free-for-all! The only time I had to show my race number was after getting off the shuttle bus and entering the race villages.
Think I paid around £660 for my hotel for 5 nights, £480 for flights, £120 race entry, £35 for a cab from JFK, £15 for a 5 day subway pass and about £7 for Penn Station-Newark train ticket (+ getting to and from the airport by train so another £40-50 for that. Flight out was in the afternoon so no overnight stay needed there).

Apparently the ballot was drawn yesterday, has anyone has an email? It didn't look positive for me when looking at the website but i wanted a definitive answer before booking other races.

I got rejected so only another 2 and I get in by the 3 rejection rule again (assuming they don't change it).
