Llanishen park parkrun kicked off today.

Considering how long it took for Cardiff to gain any extras (Tremorfa & Trelai only in the 50s for event count), now being up to 5 events gives a good spread in the city.

As a coda to last week's post about the new Elder Park parkrun, the second event, with fewer finishers (138), actually had MORE new/not many parkrunners than the inaugural (9/6 against 7/7).

Yes. Event 2 is the new event 1 in some circles. To me that shows the soft start policy works TBH. I’ve never understood why people argue the policy isn’t necessary any more when the figures they quote are based on the policy being in place. There are maybe other arguments against soft start but the fact that attendances are manageable WITH the policy isn’t one of them. It’s like saying the fall in accidents since seatbelts came in proves seat belts aren’t needed. It proves the reverse if it proves anything at all.

Tidworth down here in the south - which seemed to be quite unknown pre launch - went from 67 inaugural to 181 to 111 today, so clearly event 2 is the big one

Our first two events were 161 and 158. We’ve averaged about 85 since. Although it varies a lot from place to place, inaugural attendance being roughly double the subsequent average seems to be a not uncommon experience. Again, that is WITH the soft start policy (but also with certain self appointed groups deliberately trying to subvert it).

I think I've only been to one inaugural since policy change and that was unintentional. I was visiting relatives and didn't even know it was on. When we headed out in the morning I thought we were going to the usual 'local' event. I did jump in as a car park marshal, so made myself useful.

What is the etiquette on revealing new parkruns on here?

Don’t

Specifically I think don’t reveal launch dates. Don’t think there’s any bar on general discussion of a possible new event as long as it doesn’t turn into a fishing expidition for the start date.

There may be an inaugural parkrun happening near you. Best to check with the local parkrun volunteers to see if they want you to know about it or not.

Otherwise there are plenty of already established parkruns to go to in the UK and abroad, see: parkrun.org.uk
