Gobi - agree with all that, but I always think for shorter distances (i.e. less than 20 mile races) it makes sense to run on the Saturday for a Sunday race. Just a few easy miles can really help with fighting off the sluggish feeling...thoughts on that?i

Curly - I wrote it for a novice

For an expeienced runners Friday would be the 30 and Sat the 20, there would be no rest days

Thanks for the advice folks.

I run on a monday night and its only about 4miles tops with club and its at easy pace, i just dont want to run more and then for my calfs to fail me on the sunday :-( that's why i thought maybe tape or socks would help my legs for the sunday. I think its not stretching enough thats shot the calfs and ive only started running properly since just after xmas, I really want to this 10k in an hour or just under which i hope to do :-)

I need to get to the stage where I have a midweek 10 mile run, nowhere near that yet! Only tend to run one 10k distance prior to the race. Hopefully that will lengthen this year.

Also couldn't run the day before a race. Tried a slow amble round a park-run one weekend, the day before a race. Got to the 10k starting point on the Sunday and felt awful about 20 minutes in :-(

That's exactly how i dont want to feel HB :-)

I think i'll just do my run on monday and then maybe do a mile or so later on in the week, do lots of stretching to ease the calfs and then race on sunday.

Blimey, it is a different world. I wouldn't run a 10km on my current mileage never mind think I may get a PB.

My only races last year were 2 10Ks and 1 HM. Got another 10K in two weeks. Not qualified to give advice on what makes good preparation but what I do know is that getting injured last week and now getting sick is not going to help with any attempts at a PB !

Thanks for really helpful post Gobi - I've not really thought about the speed work issue before - made a mental note to incorporate some in the run up to next 10k!

Having a somewhat erratic training schedule/job means I tend to do what I can when I can but I think I can get the just of the week before. Dont do 2 days in a row, reduce the volume but keep some speed work. I tend to cycle to work (10k of hills there and same return jorney) should I knock this off also?
