How Slow is Too Slow?

i've given up talking about slow and fast.. partly because nothing i do is objectively 'fast' and partly because i've started going more extremely off road. i always ran off road but often on a canal path, now i'm running hillwalking routes, so the terrain is a big factor.... i've started talking about 'easy' and 'hard' instead... i can tell when i'm running 'easy' as i feel like i could go forever, i am enjoying the scenery, not puffing, only sweating gently and able to daydream without dropping pace vs. 'hard' which i'm breathing hard, getting noticeably increasingly hotter, sweating, need to focus to 'keep it up' and cursing more :-P

so i plan my training around 'easy' and 'hard'..

if i'm in 'race' or 'event' training then 'long' to me is from about 3/4 of race distance up to longer-than-race distance.

i like the easy n hard philosophy....

i also like the long theory, for me anything long is over 6 miles/10k....

i regularly do a wee 2 miler, just as a holding run to stop me having more than 2-3 days between runs....

run up a hill several times until you want to be sick
wearing a HRM

My max is well over 200
Im 47, so that stupid formula would have my max at 173
173 is quite comfy for me

Thanks PH! My formula max is 175 - that might explain why the machines in the gym used to occasionally flash at me & tell me to stop working so hard! I will try this out.

You can always be sure that if you ask a question here you get a wealth of wisdom and opinions, it's great :)

I think the easy/hard plan is a good one, but for me, for training for a marathon, 3/4 of that is nearly 20 miles, so for me I'd like to count runs less than that as "long"... I guess that was part of my oroginal issue here- I think it's been established my pace was ok for a long run, but does 11 miles count as a long run when training for a marathon?

as long as you do a good three *really* long runs (16 plus in my book, but pref 20), then you should be ok

Thanks PH- I have 20, 22 and 23 plus a couple of 16s in my schedule, cos I have already done a couple 16/17 and a 20 :)
