Definitely replace the ones you've got. Before running my first marathon I was at that point where I knew I should replace my current shoes but I was afraid there wasn't enough time to break in new ones. I went with the old shoes and it hurt. A lot.

I've since done the opposite and run a marathon in a pair that was almost new, and new is definitely better than old. If they're not broken in at the start they will be by the time you're half way round :-)

I train in fairly cheap medium weight shoes (nike eu revolution currently) and have a lighter pair of adidas adios boost for racing, even marathon. The latter have done a couple of marathons and some shorter races, plus I use them about once a week leading up to a race. First race, probably had worn half a dozen times, maybe around 50 miles, not much more. By then I knew they were comfy and unlikely to give me issues. I'm not yet thinking of replacing, wore them yesterday and they were great.

I've run a marathon in everything from box fresh to shoes with 1,000 miles on the clock.

I've only ever had one pair of road shoes and a 50 mile trail race in them when I'd had them for years

I don't think I've ever run a road marathon in shoes that I hadn't worn in to the point of being like carpet slippers. I like to feel at one with my footwear.

I only run half marathons but I like them to have at least 4 weeks training "wear" in them before a race.

Just felt compelled to look at last year's log - I ran three road marathons in the first half of last year, all in the same shoes. Approx 150 miles before the first, nearly 300 before the third.

The shoes I'm breaking in for Manchester and Windermere will have about 220 miles on them before I head down south.

I take the view that so long as they're sufficiently well worn to be comfortable and insufficiently worn to be causing injury they'll be fine.

I've just set a PB in a pair which reached 1200 miles during the race, I'm fairly certain I would still have PBd if I'd used the pair with less than 100 miles in them.
