The rock section at from Inversnaid to Bein Glass is my favourite bit of the route with the first miles till you get to conic hill (not sure what that is 15M ? ) my least favourite of the whole whw.

I agree Flip, but far rather that way round though - ie. from civilisation into wilderness. I like how the terrain starts fairly flat and fast in the Glasgow "suburb" and gets increasingly rugged as you move further away from the metropolis into the wilderness. Conic Hill is actually on the fault line that divides the lowlands from the highlands, and mentally you feel like you've "crossed the border" after Balmaha. And once you get past Rowardennan after 27 miles that's a real boost because you know you're going to complete the race. Basically that's because there's no alternative - no one can drive you away at Inversnaid, and by the time you get to Beinglas Farm on 41 miles, well, even if you can only walk the remaining 12 miles you'd do that rather than give up. Each part of the route has something to offer, for sure

But a warning for all marathon runners going "long" for the first time... You will sooooooo badly want to give up at Rowardennan as you approach it. So make that your big mantra, that you won't let yourself stop there. As I said, once past Rowardennan the medal and the beer is in the bag!

Was that directed at me Minty?! I'm no for stopping either. I'm going to be near to last to Rowardennan, so I can hopefully still run a bit by Crianlarich! :-)G

No, not you HappyG - I know how sensible you are and how you stick to a plan! But there's a lot of newbies making their first transition up to an ultra this year. Directed more at people like me who will use all their energy up in the first half of the race. I just remember being in that position during my first Fling in 2010. From Conic Hill to Rowardennan I was sure I was going to give up. But then once there, with a bit of support from the marshals and Halfpint, who was there, I managed to change my mind and carried on.
