Techie question as this is something I better get right:-

Working out my % HR as follows:- MHR(186)- RHR (48)= WHR (138) 70% is therefore WHR X 0.7 =96.6+ RHR(48) = 144.6. so tonights run at 137 was 64% so all is good.

Now all being well that is right - my problem is my Garmin 305 tells me I am averaging 73%.

I presume the calculation used by the Garmin is different and is wrong. If so is there any way I can change it.

Oh dear...I hope you haven't left EP - I need company :-(

I confess to running in the grey area instead of the over 85% bit. I just can't get my HR that high - even when racing it's hard to get it high enough. Obviously I am blaming my weedy legs for this. Not the fact my RHR on fetch is the lowest number I can spot on the HR monitor on a good day - rather than a proper average over 3 days.

Did I mention failing to adjust the RHR given my 2 months off running? I'll be outside, looking for EP....

I would just ignore the Garmins percentage figure it is based on a different calculation. My polar is the same. I just concentrate on the bpm figure, so like you say all is good.

Just checked the article http://www.fetcheveryone.com/article-view.php?id=87 so sure I am using the same formula as everyone else.

IR, Thanks yes that is what I shall do. Was just a tad worried I had my sums wrong.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
