I'm having problems with my 735xt it was giving 102% readings Tuesday then low reading since. Haven't had it that long but seemed ok before maybe needs update.

Had 225 before that was always fine

Try tightening the strap.

Could try a hard reset as well (press and hold power button). Also note, as it gets colder you might find Optical heart rate isn’t as acurate until you are warmed up a bit.

Back to HR spikes early in runs: I saw comment that it was probably picking up cadence rather than HR until the contacts get wet. This morning it was a bit chilly. My HR readings peaked at 251! I don't think my feet could move that fast.

It settled down once I'd started sweating as always.

Nellers, maybe it was picking up your shivering cadence? :)

CW, I had a question for you as a Garmin guru. I’ve had a FR 235 pretty much since they released the first ones. Early days I got a bit of cadence lock but firmware updates seemed to fix that. Over the last week or so I have had problems on two separate runs. Once where the HR was very odd throughout ( I posted the screenshot here last week) and then again today when it was erratically jumping up and down between what I thought my HR should be and somewhere near my cadence. Any tips for curing it?

puzzler, OHR is hard to pin down. The best thing to do is try it tighter (almost too tight) and slightly further up the arm. It also works worse in cold weather so you might be seeing effect soon of that. There's no golden bullet I'm afraid. Garmin are improving the technology as V2 of the sensor is in newer watches (like the 935) but it still has its moments and works far better for some than others.

Cheers CW, tried a hard reset and it was milder this morning with no problems. I’ll see how it goes

Anybody else get weird readings from a wrist based HRM when it is cold?

Yesterday the wrist based HRM behaved perfectly, it was mild.

Today, really cold, thick white frost on the grass, after three/four miles the HRM readings went mad. At a slow pace it was suggesting 150 bpm. However towards the end of the run (when the ambient temperature had increased) the readings appeared more normal.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
