I have a timex ;-) but same ANT+ technology as the Garmin. Not a soft strap though. Its annoying as I like the stats. My HR graph from recent runs is just a bunch of spikes and dips. Getting to the point that I might as well not wear it.

Will try another battery and washing the elastic strap, it worked fine for months :-(

SPR - have you tried resynching the HR strap with the watch? I had to resynch my HR strap with my Garmin when I changed the battery so before you splash out money on more batteries it may be worthwhile giving that a go.

Nice hilly 6 mile race today, my HR averaged 85% and I was very close to my recorded max at the end! Think you could say I tried hard :)

Just read the instructions and does indeed say re-sync (pair) after a battery change :-o, done that now, hopefully that fixes all the issues. Might have been reading the HRM of all the runners training for the Birmingham Half Marathon ;-).

>> My easy runs are usually at 127 bpm, which for me is at 70% maxHR and 61% wHR... probably about 8:30/m.

... which translated into a 6:21/m 5K at 90% wHR on Saturday.

Dr. Dan,

If my calculatations are correct then you were going at 168bpm for the 5km and a MHR of 93%??

How does this show that heartrate training help with the result??

Almost ... 165 bpm avHR for the race ... 92.7% maxHR.

It doesn't. :-P

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
