lums, you might have needed more food/drink I have read quite a bit on eating and drinking during running, the recommended amounts are: 300-600ml fluid per hour (the upper end is for heavier people in hotter weather) 30-60g carbs per hour. I think each gel is about 25g . so based on what you said you didnt have enough food or drink. If you drink LS or some other sports drink you get carbs that way, about 6g per 100ml so a bottle will give you about an hours worth of carbs On my 20 miler yesterday I drank nearly a litre of water, 500ml sports drink and ate half a banana, some mini jafffa cakes (first time with those, they worked really well, one fits in the mouth and easy to eat while running, tescos own!!), maltesers, again, easy to eat as you can suck them and flapjack. I prob had more or less the recommended amount of food and drink as I was out for 3.5hours

Blimey! That sounds like more than I'd eat on a normal day. Do I need much on an 8 miler?

Thanks hellen, that's really interesting. Looks like I need a bit more fuel on board, I only had the 2 gels at stamford, but I had 2 big pasta meals preceding it and a banana and porridge before hand. It's all a learning experience though - and i am learning a lot on how to make this marafun thing work!

Wow Helen .. that's lots to eat. My legs ache like crazy today and I think I was mistaken to only consume 330ml of lucozade sport during my 2:44 - 16 mile run. I'm going to have to put some more serious thought into food on the run.

Its not as bad as it sounds really.
500ml of LS sport contains 20g carbs which is about enough carbs for an hour and enough fluids for an hour. IF you dont like LS then you will need to eat things so 1-2 gels per hour or some other food which you like but which has a high carb content. I found mini jaffa cakes to be good, didnt add up the carbs in them though

What about jelly babies? Do you ever take any of those, Hellen?
How do you carry all your food and drink?

no jelly babies for me. I had the banana when I looped past home so didnt need to carry it, also have extra water bottles at home. the other goodies were in my nathan 10km running belt which holds a fair amount and you dont really knwo you are wearing it. I didnt have loads to eat, the jaffa cakes were mini ones so had about 8 of those in a bag, about 10 littel maltesers in another bag then some bits of flapjack wrapped into bite sized pieces wrapped in tin foil. Also had a gel in there but didnt have it

I had 6 jelly babies on my 16 miler yesterday, one for every mile over ten.
Lums, running is as much mental as physical. Plus you can feel really crap with not enough to eat beforehand...
