Darlington played (and lost) in the same FA cup tournament twice, due to Man Utd being unable to compete due to a prior engagement.

Theoretically, could this happen to more than one team in a cup competition? that may up the number considerably?

In the old days (in Scotland anyway) it was possible that after 3 or 4 draws that both teams would proceed to the next round and could conceivably be drawn together again - not sure if they did. I am sure there was one year when this happened and we ended up with 3 teams in the semi final and so someone got a bye to the final

Going back to the original question, I remember Crystal Palace playing Swindon Town six times in 1988-1989. Division 2 (2-1 and 0-1), League Cup (2-0 and 2-1), Play-Offs (2-0 and 0-1).

That's just my team but in the days of cup marathons, there was quite a lot of repetitive fixture syndrome during a season.

Because Real Madrid and Barcelona are so dominant and it's almost always a shock for them to be knocked out of any cup, it's almost normal for them to play each other 7 times a season. Two league, two Copa del Rey (it's two-legged from the point the top division teams join), two Champions League, one Supercopa de España.

In 2011 they played each other four times in one month - 16 April league, 20 April Copa final, 27 April and 3 May Champions League. It was almost like the World Series.

OK, an attempt to keep this going with football related trivia...

Only 3 players in history have been involved in the world record transfer fee twice. Name them.
