Oooo, just found this thread - I'm in for Manchester too, couldn't face Milton blummin Keynes again (they have officialy changed the name of the town to that haven't they?!) ;) Hoping to get under 4.15, but don't seem to be getting enough MP miles in, which I think help me the most so will see how I go!

Does anyone know where water stations are on course and what is available in terms of gels etc?

As long as the weather is better than it was last year.

Is the course really as flat as it seems?? How does it compare to say Liverpool or London?

Ninky Nonk, there are about 14 or 15 water stations according to the route map - mapmytri.com so only 2 miles max between them.

WarringtonRunner, I'm relying on it being fairly flat!

Ninky Nonk - as mushroom says, there are plenty of water stations. See greatermanchestermarathon.com which also shows gel/isontic drinks stations. From their Facebook page:
