Not much choice for YHA in the region I am afraid - there is one in Newcastle but I imagine that was booked up weeks ago (but always a chance of a cancellation?) other than that you are right out in the country I think

There is the Albatross hostel near the station, I've stopped there the past 2 years, they usually double the price but still only £35 for a bed in a dorm, it's very friendly.

I've done a little bit of reading on the great run website and found out why there is a cricket game the same weekend as the GNR.
"The Great North City Games, which will be run annually until at least the 2012 Olympics, will feature of host of different track and field favourites and represents a real first in athletics.
Described in cricketing terminology as a cross between Twenty-20 and the Ashes, the new event will be held in Newcastle upon Tyne on September 19, 2009 – the day before the city hosts the world’s greatest half-marathon, the Bupa Great North Run. "
And I have finally gotten through to that durham yha and booked it as it was the cheapest I could find. I'm sure they still have some rooms left for those looking.
