Bushes for me too - why change the habit of a (running) lifetime! I'm not shy and I'm certainly not going to waste time in a never-ending queue.
Can any of you GNR veterans advise a GNR virgin on travel? We plan to park at the finish - would you recommend metro or bus back to the start, and how long will it take?

It'll take hours to get out of South Shields... you might be quicker parking at the start and catching the Metro back... either way it's a scrum.
The Metro from South Shields has got to be better than the bus.

*continues to lurk on offchance anyone drops pearls of wisdom of places still with numbers*
Or join up with someone and put one car at start, one at end

I have gone in the bushes every year. No shame the loos (Are appauling) So i have heard.
I had to walk 3 miles back to the car last year after the finish. there were no spaces!!! It is really 6 and 2 threes which end you park.
Metro from shields to Haymarket the best option. But I think you have to change metros at some point.

Thanks all. I think we are stuck with parking at the finish because we have to dump No1 daughter with a charity stand. Early morning, I think, and even less chance of running a decent time!

Hayley, if you have to hang a round for a while you shoudl be okay - the traffic does get moving, and I can help with backroads, etc if you need details of an escape route. I've only done the GNR once, but my parents live on the main route out of South Sheilds, so the GNR traffic has been a conversation point in their house for years

I tried to look on the metro site to pre-order my metro tickets, because that was has been recommended but can't see weekend tickets which I was told you could buy for £7.00. anyone know how to do it?

I usually hang around a bit at the end and jump on the shuttle bus to Newcastle. After 13 miles the walk to shields metro can be a bit of a trek. And the pub next to the finish line is good and alwyas has plenty of staff on.

As Geordies who've done a lot of GNR running and spectating between us we always park at South Shields. The bus is easy to the start in the morning. At the end it takes a long time to get out of their no matter what you're doing, so I'd also thoroughly recommend the pub.
I'm just spectating this year and I'll cheer loudly for anyone in a Fetch shirt.
