I think I'm being spectacularly blond today. When a title has a part in brackets, what is that second part called?! I managed to get what I meant across to housemate by calling it a sub-title, but we're both pretty confident that's not the name. And now I can't recall what the official name is. Help a numpty out, please! |

I think it's 'pathetical', and by having part of the title in parenthesis, the impact of the title is diminished.

Is that who brings grammer nerds presents (at Christmas)? (Or should it be "brings presents to grammer nerds"?) |

Thanks all. This terminology doesn't ring a bell for me, so I imagine it's one of these things that I can't remember due to not having known it in the first place!

I've heard Heaven 17's "...(And That's No Lie)" described as the only UK chart single (#52 in 1985) to have its title entirely enclosed in parentheses, though an uber-pedant would surely dismiss that claim due to the ellipsis. (I genuinely misspelt "grammar" in my previous post - the mortification!) |
