The Garmin range has had loads of new watches this year.

FR25 new low end now with Bluetooth, step count, notifcations (FR10/15 will be discounted)
FR230 mid range, like a 25 with more features (FR220/210 will be discounted)
FR630 high end, like a 230 but touchscreen, wifi and more bells and whistles (FR620/610 will be discounted)

these are all running watches (although 230 and 630 add in basic cycling)

FR9xx are tri watches

Fenix are hiking watches, or prettier tri watches if you want

then you have FR235 which is a FR230 with optical heart rate (FR225 will be discounted). It's not out yet but could be very good.

Confusing, isn't it? Liking Johnny O's recommendation of the Fenix 2, looks like a good bet. Not sure about the Suunto one as, at one time at least, people were posting about having problems with the uploading and the watch being difficult to master. I am not good at mastering difficult software.....

By decent battery life I mean 8-10 hours, really, as this is the max you would do in a days touring Canoeing or any sort of ultra event I might contemplate + a margin for error where you forget to make sure it was fully charged before you started!

The Garmin FR 220 has 10 hour GPS battery life, and 50m water resistance, and since it's being replaced by the 230, is now down to £115 at handtec.co.uk

The newer watches download satellite data when you sync them, so lock GPS faster.
I have a Fenix 1 and a Fenix 3, and the 3 leaves the 1 in the dust for reliability and usability, in my view. Actually, Bru-Bru, if you want a play with it I could send you my F1, it's just gathering dust at the moment and the F2 isn't all that different (usability better than the F1 but not as good as the F3).

I still can't handle the one I have got. I struggle changing between the applications using the bezel and the buittons, I am hopeless!

Thanks for the kind offer, Badger. At the moment, I am wary of the Fenix watches because I am afraid I won't be able to operate them properly. You're Cambridge way, aren't you? To save postage I could buy you a pint next time I am over that way and have a go with your Fenix 1?

I'm in the same boat as Warton Runner, my trusty old FR305 is starting to play up so was looking to upgrade to the FR310XT but seeing the price of the FR220 has made me think.

I had been very happy with my 310XT up to now, so happy to recommend it to 305 users. I did wonder, though, if these newer, glossier ones would be faster/lighter/thinner which I guess the 220 probably is?

Thanks for the recommendation Bru-Bru, I was going to get the 220 until I stuck my head in here and remembered the 310XT. I do like the 20hr GPS life of the 310XT as I'm considering doing a 12hr race next year and maybe another and a 50 miler the year after, so need a watch that'll last for hours.
