Hello wonderful knowledgeable Fetchies! :)

I'm running the Great North Run this year and will be travelling up on the Saturday and staying in the university halls of residence that night (travel package with Nirvana). Last year they offered an evening meal which I took advantage of but this year they've confirmed they won't be offering one.

Based on last year the coach won't make it to Newcastle until late afternoon which pretty much rules out trying to get over to Gateshead for the pasta party and as last year the only bit of Newcastle I discovered was the walk from the halls to the start line I'm a bit stuck on what to do or where to go to get some food. I imagine anywhere in the vicinity is likely to be pretty busy as well so I thought I would turn to Fetchland to see if anyone had any recommendations for getting some food on the Saturday night?

Thanks in advance

Which Uni halls of residence are you in? Most are very near the city centre where you'll have a choice of places to eat - plenty of Italian, Chinese and other options.

My rec would be Pani's paniscafe.co.uk - authentic, busy Italian on a side street near the Theatre Royal. Likely to be busy, but service is quick and food is good. But you should have plenty of places to choose from.

What kind of food are you looking for? There are loads of places an easy walk away - if you narrow it down a bit I'm sure we can suggest a few. I take it you're in the halls near the uni - Leazes or Richardson road?

Thanks both, it's Leazes Parade I'm staying in:

Usual pre-race meal would be something pasta based so an Italian would probably be ideal

If you head towards monument/Eldon square shopping centre (on your map) there are loads of places to choose from. From your map you can go across Leazes park to Richardson road or down barrack road towards st James park and then onwards. It'll only take about 10 mins and plenty of choice. It gets you near to monument/theatre Royal for pani's and there are lots of others round there. In particular Eldon square - monument - theatre Royal - grey street there are many places to eat.

There are quite a few Italian restaurants around there. I can't think of them all! There is prezzo in Eldon square, Jamie's Italian by monument, carluccios a bit further down (grey street), pani's near the theatre, zizzis further down grey street and several more I think. Sometimes it's easiest to have a reservation on a Saturday but there are some you can generally get a table at.

My advice would be to book in advance, the year I did GNR everywhere was fully booked, I ended up with pizza in a pub.
