So my home office desktop PC died and a replacement is on the way. I've removed the two hard drives, one SSD and the other a conventional 3.5" drive.

I can access the files on the SSD by hooking it up to my old laptop by usb. But the cable won't work with the 3.5" drive -- the connector fits but the drive spin when plugged into the laptop and it doesn't show up in the file manager. So obviously I need something different -- what would that be called, please? If someone could name it, or even point me to it at Amazon or wherever, that would be great. Ta in advance!

The spinning rust drive will need more power than the USB port can probably provide (also 12volt which isn't on USB) so you need an adapter with extra power supply i would guess.

I would imagine the 3.5" drive will require an additional power source of some kind?

Too late now, but there's also some on the market with 2 USB leads, so 'twice' the power.

They're quite easy to use and to copy data - have done so for both my daughters in the past. Although if the disk has failed, you might find some patchy areas and/or failed files.

I wasn't aware of that but will remember for future if sth similar repeats itself.

The pc just went phut, the power light was on but nothing was happening. I guessed motherboard or some other catastrophic failure. I may only use this adapter once, to rescue what I can (assuming the disk still works, I hope it does). The pc was about 6 years old so maybe it should have lasted a little longer, but it did get lots of use so I don't feel too aggrieved.

Mmmm ... shiny new kit, arriving within the hour courtesy of DPD :-)
