Both have bluetooth, so so long as you have a phone with bluetooth and a data connection / wifi, I'd say no you don't. Well, not for that anyway.

I can't remember the last time I connected my Garmin to a PC. Even software updates come via bluetooth.

The only reason I connect my fenix 3 is to transfer courses onto it - don't think that can be done by bluetooth, but that could just be my 'old' watch

I use a PC for pulling off screencaps, archiving FIT files & configuration files, and installing beta firmware releases. If you don't do any of those, a Fenix 5 doesn't really need a PC, no. Can't speak to the Edge, but I think Larkim already has.

Oh yeah, and courses, but even that the F5 with an Android phone can do with a ConnectIQ app and a partner app on the phone.

You can get courses from the Garmin connect app also, you just have to set them up on the Garmin connect website first

Courses can be set up on the app, much easier on a PC though.

I guess your choice of course creation site is another conversation entirely 😇
Garmin is better than it was a few years ago, but still doesn't let you control exactly where you get cues to turn.

Sam, you don't even need to set the courses up on the Garmin web site (at least for iPhone users). Just get the .gpx file on your phone (email, files, BT, whatever) and "open in Garmin Connect"
