I'm looking to upgrade my Garmin. On Amazon the 620 and the 230 are a similar price. I'm not bothered about optical heart rate and will use a strap.
I know the 230 is a later model, but the 620, (before the 630) was higher in the range.
Any thoughts on which would be the better buy?

It depends on what you want. The 620 is older, but more fully featured. It has Advanced Running Dynamics (if you have a compatible HRM), more available screens (4 instead of 2 I believe) but lacks ConnectIQ (which is useful if you want to add things like mapping onto your watch. If it was me I'd go for 230. It's still getting software releases and fixes but it's very stable now. Also the screens nicer and it looks better.

Thanks for the response. I not too worried about loads of data. The 230 was my choice, but I saw the 620 this morning at a similar price which threw me. I will enjoy the activity tracking as well.

Does WiFi matter?
The 620 once set up will hook up to the WiFi when you get home and automatically upload any run to Garmin Connect. That can then be hooked up to this site so runs automatically appear in the log without any effort.*

*except once in a blue moon where Connect refuses to send the files, but that's only happened twice since I've had mine and I've had it since its release...

Just to say, Bluetooth works in the same way as WiFi and is on the 230. To be honest there is no reason for Wi-fi on the 620 apart from if you don't have a smart phone and that it's slightly quicker than Bluetooth

I'd much prefer a watch that updates via Wifi than Bluetooth... as Wifi is always on (both at home and at work), where as I never have Bluetooth turned on (as my phone battery is bad enough without that draining it as well).

Is it proper wifi or does it need an ant+ USB thingy?

Proper WiFi.

Bluetooth does work, but as I run a Vivosmart watch and several bluetooth speakers etc, WiFi is faster and more reliable.

I'm on Linux, so ZERO Garmin support, but once WiFi is set up I do not have to have anything to do with their software :-)

Interesting; I'vr got the garmin swim and that needs the ant+. Handy compared to a cable but still a pain.

Cheers guys. At the mo I have to load data via my PC which is a pain as it takes an age to fire up. Bluetooth or wi-fi will be an advancement for me. I've got a 310xt at the mo.
