Set it to look for satellites then take it outside, before you get changed.

And welcome to Fetch, Paulmar. Lurking is on Wednesdays. The Hotel Bastardos can be found under 'TriSport Fetch: the smell of 220'.

I find the satelite lock quite quick, but the bezel is irritating, particularly for a fat-fingered dope who often wears jackets, but you can lock it, as long as you do it before you set off, as attempts to lock it while you're moving will see you stop the timer or start a new lap, if you're a fat-fingered dope. 3/5 stars.

mebbe an obvious no answer - but will other manufacturers' heart rate sensor straps work with the 405?

No. Other Garmin straps do though, I believe. My 405 strap works with my EDGE500, as does my 310xt strap. My 310xt strap works with a 405.

just to confirm - the sensor of my ancient targetfitness £20 from Argos HRM fails to converse with my 405.

I received my watch yesterday and had a play with it earlier. I quite like the bezel for now....though I haven't yet gone out running with it...I was going to, but a headache stopped me. Will have to get one done with the watch tomorrow.

yay...a new toy. :-)

First the 405 looks for the same satellites it last found, so if you have let it aquire some time in the last hour or so it is really fast at locking on. Seconds. Sometimes instant. If you haven't switched it on for a day you have no idea whether it will be ready to go in 5 seconds or 5 minutes. I don't like loitering in the street looking a bit dodgy so I prefer to switch it on and put it outside before I get my kit on. It is such a brilliant device though.

I am less enthusiastic about the speed of the garmin website http://connect.garmin.com.

I have decided I mostly really like the garmin 405.

Especially considering I just got yo use the data from garmin connect in my year 11 class to show why digital equipment is better than traditional methods of monitoring athletes performance.

Come now, it's not as good as having your trainer cycling alongside you with a stopwatch, screaming in your ear.
